Microsoft Security Essentials 4.0 Final

Microsoft has released Microsoft Security Essentials 4.0, it's free anti-virus/anti-malware utility after 6 months of beta testing. MSE 4.0 include a streamlined user interface, better performance, and a refined remediation experience for threats that need to be quarantined.

MSE's "Automatic Remediation" now does a better job of quarantining threats on its own, for instance, no user intervention required. And Microsoft claims scanning performance and malware detection rates have both improved on the previous build.

The program can now also use the Microsoft Active Protection Service (the new name for SpyNet) to automatically report malware to Microsoft, helping the company to create new definitions and more quickly respond to new outbreaks.

:download: Download MSE 4.0

MSE 4.0 runs on Windows XP with SP3, Vista with SP1/SP2, or Windows 7.

MSE will be bundled with Windows Defender in Windows 8, negating the need for a separate download in the future.

Kaspersky: Apple is 10 years behind Microsoft on security

Eugene Kaspersky, CEO of the influential Kaspersky security firm today made the comment that will rile some: "I think they [Apple] are ten years behind Microsoft in terms of security," he said. But that is only the beginning. He went on to say that:

For many years I’ve been saying that from a security point of view there is no big difference between Mac and Windows. It’s always been possible to develop Mac malware, but this one was a bit different. For example it was asking questions about being installed on the system and, using vulnerabilities, it was able to get to the user mode without any alarms.

Mac security has been recently thrust into the public discourse as several flaps have turned into real stories. The Flashback malware hit a huge number of machines, with TNW reporting later on that some 650,000 Mac machines still had the bad code. Even more, a new study out has some rather stark figures, from the perspective that Macs are invulnerable: One in five Mac computers carry Windows malware but only 2.7% harbor Mac OS X malware.

2.7% isn't too bad, but Kaspersky sees this as a growing problem, just waiting for exploitation:

Cyber criminals have now recognised that Mac is an interesting area. Now we have more, it’s not just Flashback or Flashfake. Welcome to Microsoft’s world, Mac. It’s full of malware.

Steam client coming to Linux, officially!

Steam client and Source Engine are being ported to Linux finally! Above photo is of Left 4 Dead 2, a Steamworks game based on Source engine, running natively on Linux.... No Wine library or anything else for "fake" support. This is on an Ubuntu 11.10 installation with the AMD Catalyst Linux driver.

Right now the game they have been working on the most for their Linux client is Left 4 Dead 2. Why L4D2? Basically because it is a stable code-base to do for their initial porting. They have plans to bring their other titles to Linux as well as lobby other game developers using Steam and the Source Engine to bring their games to Linux -- natively.

Typing "zerg rush" in Google.com returns the regular Google search results for this unusual term, but soon, little O's (from the Google logo) start dropping from the top of the page.

Use your mouse to click and destroy the O's - or zerglings - before they eat your search results and gather into two, large G's on the page. At the end of the game, you can share your scores via Google+, telling followers how many zerglings you took down.

The term Zerg Rush originates from the real-time strategy (RTS) game Starcraft. "The 'Zerg' race is notoriously known for its ability to mass-produce offensive units within a short time frame, thus allowing the player to overpower the opponent by sheer number.

Facebook has partnered with security vendors Symantec, McAfee, Microsoft, Sophos, and Trend Micro in a program to improve Facebook's security and broaden the availability of the antivirus softwares.

Blacklisted URLs:

When a Facebook user posts a link to one of the blacklisted URL, Facebook pops up an interstitial warning page before the browser actually connects off to the suspicious destination. Facebook's partners in this effort included McAfee, Google, Web of Trust, and Websense. Facebook's URL blacklist system will now include the malicious URL databases of all of the security vendors.

Antivirus Marketplace:

Facebook launched its own Antivirus Marketplace, where users can download the various antivirus software packages from Microsoft, McAfee, Trend Micro, Sophos and Symantec under six-month free licenses. These companies will also be able to use the Facebook Security Blog to post their bulletins and information for its more than six million followers.

PLEASE HELP

I use symSMB to access shared folders on my PC and Nokia phone. It was all working fine till yesterday. But now i can not access the shared folder on my phone from windows 7 (SP1) PC. I have also a windows XP VMware virtual machine. Shared folders on XP is also inaccessible from WIN 7 now. But i can access shared folders on Windows 7 from my phone and XP. The error code and message is '0x80070035 network path not found'.

My win 7 is running a homegroup. Printer & File sharing, Network discovery etc are ON. Printer & File sharing is added in exception list of windows firewall.

I guess, the problem started after a windows update. My antivirus is NOD32.

What could be the problem? Is it something wrong with the router. I rebooted the router, reinstalled symSMB still problem not solved.

Please someone help me to solve this mystery.

New Features of Firefox 14 Aurora

Firefox 14 in Aurora channel brings some long awaited features to the browser including Click-to-Play for Plugins like Flash, URL autocomplete in the address bar and more.

Click to Play isn't enabled by default. To turn it on, just head into about:config and search for plugins.click_to_play. Double-click on that option to turn it on. Afterwards, all plugins should show a "Click here to activate" button before things like Flash fully load on a page. It doesn't look like you can whitelist certain pages, though, so if you like to keep Flash around on some sites, you'll want to stick with Flashblock for now.

Autocomplete works pretty much how you'd expect: when you start typing in a URL, it'll autocomplete to what it thinks you're looking for instead of giving you the old dropdown menu.

HTTPS is now used by default for all Google searches

Mac users will find that it finally works with Lion's full screen functionality.
