Infographic - How Big is Apple

$

This infographic will tell you how does Apple profit compare to Google revenue? How much does China contribute to Apple revenue, in just two years? And how much cash does the average Apple Store generate per square foot?

Posted Image

Apple generated more revenue ($85.83 billion) than all fiscal 2010 ($65.23 billion). The company's net income for first fiscal half exceeds that of fiscal 2009 and 2010 combined and is surprisingly close to all of fiscal 2011. By measure of financial performance Apple isn't the same company it was three years ago.

After years of falling usage share, Microsoft's Internet Explorer has rebounded nicely in 2012, not by halting its declines but by reversing them. The trend continued yet again in April, with IE edging up to 54 percent usage share.

IE 9 on Windows 7 grew 4 percentage points in April to control 35.5 percent of that part of the market, compared with 21 percent for Chrome and 15.3 percent for Firefox.

In the United States, IE 9’s control of Windows 7-based web browsing is far more dominant. There, IE 9 controls 53 percent of browser usage, compared with also-rans Chrome (15 percent) and Firefox (12.5 percent).

Google shared an interesting new video on it's blog today. The video is about "cloud computing", the term being used a lot these days. Gmail, Google Drive and Calendar, all the Google tools are cloud based services made to help you connect and collaborate online with others more quickly and easily, without having to deal with the hassles and frustrations of installing and managing traditional software.

Google has also made special tour page for demonstrating it's cloud services:

New Firefox UI 'Australis' for uniform look across platforms

Mozilla's Stephen Horlander created a new design called Australis that will bring an updated look and feel to Firefox on the desktop. The new theme will bring curved tabs, a simplified menu, and a number of other improvements to Firefox. Mozilla has also separately been working on a more functional start page and a cleaner interface for managing downloads.

Posted Image

The mobile Firefox user interface is already in close alignment with the new style. Some updated mockups published in the slide presentation show how further refinement will increase visual consistency between the mobile user interface and the Australis design on the desktop.

Mozilla is also working on a Metro version of the Firefox Web browser for Windows 8. The Metro design mockups included in the slide presentation show a layout that is similar to the one that Firefox uses on Android tablets.

Mediafire Launches Free Unlimited Cloud Storage Plan

The popular file sharing website Mediafire is now providing unlimited cloud storage space. When compared to the free 5GB and 7GB offered by Google Drive and SkyDrive, it's a compelling lure – but what's the catch?

Well, the files will be removed on inactive accounts. So you can't use it as an unlimited data backup service. You will actually have to use the service on regular basis.

Three tiers of accounts are available. All come with unlimited storage.

  • Free – 200MB file size limit, files removed on inactive accounts, lack of other features
  • $9/m – 4GB file-size limit, custom folder links, ad free, statistics, more
  • $49/m – 10GB per file size limit, custom domain, more

There is a MediaFire desktop client available for Windows, Mac, and Linux, called MediaFire Express. Watch the video below to know what the desktop client can do:

Anyone else getting the HTC One X?

So today I preordered the HTC One X, after confirmation that my phone line was eligible for an upgrade (perfect timing!). This was an interesting purchase for me: it is my first Android device.

In 2007, I purchased an iPod Touch on release day. That was my first venture into a truly "smart" device that I could carry with me anywhere, that could do anything. I didn't end up getting a smartphone until 2010, when I bought the iPhone 4. That was after owning three generations of the iPod Touch, after being already very comfortable with iOS. In 2011, I began looking into Windows Phone. I was interested in it when it was first announced, but after Mango's annoucement, I decided to take the leap. I was breaking away from iOS- a leap of faith, almost.

I definitely didn't regret it. I bought a Dell Venue Pro, a fairly nice bit of hardware, though I do regret not going for a nicer (yet more expensive) HTC device. The Windows Phone experience, however, is in my opinion equal to or greater than iOS. I've used it since September of last year, and I really do love using it as a daily device.

I did, however, begin to get more seriously interested in Android after ICS was announced. I've always looked at Android, no matter how popular it has become, as sort of the "odd man out" of the group. It's never been very smooth, the experience is extremely fragmented across devices, and carriers/OEM's like to fill it with bloatware and unnecessary customization. On the other hand, it's an extremely open platform, has a great development community, and has a huge app store to boot. With ICS, however, Google really seems to be taking itself seriously. I finally made the choice to switch to Android when the HTC One X was announced, because holy crap, is that a beauty of a phone.

So yeah, here I go. Into the scary world of Android. After I've owned this for a time, I'll feel like I'm truly able to speak my opinion on which is the best of the three, which is something that not too many truly can. While I may have previously looked at Android with disinterest, HTC and Google have really stepped up their game. May 6th can't come soon enough.

Update: Download Windows 8 Release Preview

Microsoft has revealed that the Windows 8 Release Preview will be made available on May 31st, a whole day earlier than was rumored. A blog post on the Windows 8 Hardware blog, has revealed the May 31st date:

Quote

Welcome to the Windows 8 Hardware blog! I’m Chuck Chan,
Corporate Vice President on the Windows Development team. We’re very excited to
make available today the Windows 8 Release Preview on the Windows Dev Center. Windows 8 represents a leap forward for the Windows platform, the
development tool set, and the device experiences you can build for Windows.
We’re launching this blog to give you some insight into how we designed and
built Windows 8, and to explore the best practices for developing great
hardware and drivers, as you enter the new world of Windows 8 development.

The people contributing to this blog are the engineers
building Windows 8 and the tools and kits that support it. Our goal is to help
you get started by focusing on the “why” and “how” of building amazing PCs and
device experiences for Windows 8. Each blog post will present a development
topic and tie together information from the Dev Center, Forums, MSDN Library, and where it makes sense, samples from the Windows Hardware Code Gallery.

We designed the Windows 8 platform and tools to help you
create high-quality drivers and Metro style device apps using an integrated,
modern tool set. Using the Windows Driver Kit (WDK) and Visual Studio, you can
write, build, sign package, deploy, test, and debug your drivers and apps
directly from Visual Studio. With the new Windows Hardware Certification Kit,
you can ensure the compatibility and reliability of your devices, and provide a
great overall user experience.

To get started, download and install Windows 8 Release Preview, the Windows Driver Kit 8, and Visual Studio Professional 2012. The Windows 8 SDK is also included with Visual Studio. As you begin using Windows 8, you’ll
notice that we’ve added new features and improved existing ones. In addition to
providing a modern tool set, we’ve also been hard at work improving power
management and refining the way you provide a great user experience for devices
with Metro style device apps. We’ll share more
details in future posts.

The Windows Development team will post to this blog once
every one to two weeks until the release of Windows 8. Commenting is
encouraged, and we are looking forward to a lively conversation. Please apply
common courtesy and stay on topic with your comments. The Windows Hardware Community Forum is also a great place for hardware-related questions and discussion about
Windows 8.

We can’t wait to see the amazing devices and experiences
you’re building for Windows 8 come to life!

Chuck Chan, May 31 2012
