Microsoft is planning to drop the Windows 8 name ASAP. The next Windows update "Threshold" will most likely be called Windows 9 according to Paul Thurrott, and will be shipped in April 2015. Windows 8 Update 1 which is a service pack type update is still on the roadmap for this year. The Update 1 will be much focused on Windows Phone and Xbox integration where as the "Threshold" update will be released as a new name (Windows 9) and will see the return of the Start menu and the ability to run Metro-style apps on the desktop alongside desktop applications. Modern (Metro UI) will be a major focus area of "Threshold"

We can expects three milestone releases (Beta, Release Candidate, etc.) of "Threshold" before its final release in April 2015.

Update: The well known leaker WZor has tweeted in response to the earlier speculation that Microsoft will RTM (release to manufacturing) Windows 9 by 21 October 2014.

Google to bring traditional Windows apps to Chrome OS

Remember Microsoft's Pawn Stars TV ad which shows Chromebook isn't a real laptop because it can't run popular apps such as Office?

Now Google has announced a partnership with VMWare to bring Windows apps to its Chromebooks. The Windows apps like Office and Photoshop will run in VMWare’s cloud-based infrastructure and stream to Chrome OS. Microsoft is dropping Windows XP support in April and Google's intention is to capture the market of Windows XP powered small industries which are ready to switch to a cheaper cloud-powered service.

"As the countdown to Windows XP end of life continues, deploying Chromebooks and taking advantage of a DaaS environment ensures that security vulnerabilities, application compatibility and migration budgets will be a thing of the past.", says Rajen Sheth, product manager of Google enterprise.

Rumor: Microsoft to bring Android apps to Windows

Microsoft is thinking about allowing Android apps to run on both Windows and Windows Phone according to Verge's sources. Some people in Microsoft favor the idea of simply enabling Android apps inside its Windows and Windows Phone Stores, while others believe it could lead to the death of the Windows platform and lower user's interest in the Modern (Metro) apps.

Microsoft isn’t the first company that is considering Android apps in its mobile platform. BlackBerry did the same thing with BlackBerry 10, but still failed to attract the market.

Happy valentine everyone. Hope you guys are having a great day with love and care. It’s almost a year since releasing version 7.0. I couldn’t find the right timing to release 8.1 updates back then so sorry for taking this long and I hope this big update could make up the lost time. Lots of bugs fixed and 8.1 enhancements are implemented neatly. Windows XP hasn’t been forsaken in this release and you actually get stable and low memory consumption Newgen here so be sure to update it.

Windows 8 UX Pack 8.0 Changelog

-Added Aero Frame UI from Transformation Pack version in case default Aero can’t be enabled

Since Windows 8.1 Update 1 doesn’t have anything new to implement in this project, I think next version might take sometimes until we could see Windows Threshold.

Microsoft launches Office Online

Microsoft has rebranded its Office Web Apps to Office Online after re-launching its SkyDrive cloud storage service as OneDrive. "We heard from customers that the inclusion of Apps in our name was confusing", says Microsoft's Amanda Lefebvre. "Are they something I install? Do I go to an app store to get them? No, to use them all you need is a web browser. Ah! You say. So it's like Office, online. Yes, exactly. Office Online".

So what's new?

  • New simplified interface of Office.com. No need to sign in to SkyDrive (now OneDrive) for accessing the web apps.
  • The free Office Web Apps (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote) have been rebranded to Office Online.
  • Hundreds of free templates for Word, PowerPoint and Excel Online.
  • The app switcher now includes tiles for each Office Online web app.

Microsoft is going to cut the price of Windows 8.1 by 70 percent for makers of low-cost computers and tablets to compete with cheaper rivals like Google Chromebooks. Hardware manufacturers will be charged $15 to license Windows 8.1 and preinstall it on devices that retail for less than $250, instead of the usual fee of $50. The discount will apply to any products that meet the price limit, with no restrictions on the size or type of device.

Microsoft has finally officially announced the first ever update for Windows 8.1 is coming this spring. Windows 8.1 works flawlessly on a touch-screen but the "Update 1" is aimed especially for mouse and keyboard users like a title bar at the top of modern apps, and power / search buttons on the Windows 8.1 Start Screen. Microsoft has made a number of UI changes to Windows 8.1 that will make the Modern side of the OS "more familiar and more convenient for users with mouse/keyboard."

Over the next few months, we’ll continue to deliver innovation and progression with an update to Windows 8.1, coming this spring. We’re especially excited about several things I want to preview with you here.

  • We’ll enable our partners to build lower cost hardware for a great Windows experience at highly competitive price points.
  • We are making improvements to the user interface that will naturally bridge touch and desktop, especially for our mouse and keyboard users. We have a number of targeted UI improvements that keep our highly satisfying touch experience intact, but that make the UI more familiar and more convenient for users with mouse/keyboard. Don’t worry, we still LOVE and BELIEVE IN touch… but you’ll like how much more smooth and convenient these changes make mouse and keyboard use!
  • We are enhancing support for enterprise customers via a few tweaks, particularly including features that greatly improve IE8 compatibility in Internet Explorer 11, which is especially critical for web-based line of business applications. Additionally, we’re extending mobile device management capabilities and making deployment easier.

She says it's been happening a lot lately, 3 times yesterday and then once today, this is a photo of what happened while we were watching a flash video, you can see where the flash video and the taskbar should be but to be honest, I don't think I've ever seen anything like this before. She had to restart it after that to get it working properly again. Anyone know what it is and how to fix it?
