Amazon is selling Kinect Sensor for Windows for $250. If you were hoping to pick up a Kinect motion sensor for Windows and start playing Xbox 360-like motion sensor games like Kinect Sports or Just Dance, then sorry to blow up your bubble. This expensive device has nothing to do with consumers having fun. Instead, Kinect for Windows is, for now at least, purely a toy for developers, Paul Thurrott found out.

Kinect Sensor for Windows is an updated version of motion sensors which now supports new near mode that no longer requires using it in a room that's at least 6 feet deep.

But when you plug the Kinect into a Windows-based PC, nothing happens. Check Device Manager, however, and you'll see a Kinect entry, so the drivers were properly found and loaded. But the device doesn't register as a normal video or audio device, so you can't use it for, say, Skype in either capacity. It just sits there, with a blinking green light, doing nothing.

The device does not ship with any software at all!

If you want to enjoy the motion sensor gaming with Kinect then either wait for Windows 8 which hopefully support Kinect out of the box or wait for some PC games to be released with Kinect support or buy Xbox 360.
