The team that HP has working on the open WebOS project have made good on their promise and delivered a beta version. The source code is released under Apache 2.0 license.
WebOS beta release includes two distinct development environments labelled desktop and mobile.
The desktop environment runs on Ubuntu Linux and is designed to be primarily for developing the OS and apps.
The mobile development environment uses OpenEmbedded standards and comes with an ARM emulator. This is meant for those developing OS ports for various devices. While the team continues to build the platform with the community's help, the first stable release of the OS is expected sometime this month.
