Microsoft switched from a glossy UI (Windows Vista) to a flat UI (Windows 8). Mozilla is also making Firefox logo simpler by removing the gloss. The logo is now optimized to look crisper and clear on mobile devices with small screens yet would still scale really well on high resolution displays.
