Microsoft is making full use of its Skype acquisition by making it the default messaging app in its Windows OS. Windows 8.1 RTM will retire the Messaging app in the favor of Skype. The Preview version of Windows 8.1 doesn't include the traditional built-in Messaging app.

Skype is already available on Windows 8 as a Modern app, which can be downloaded through Windows Store. The built-in version of Skype for Windows 8.1 will likely work in the same way it does today but with more tight integration.
